Dungen

The title translates roughly into English as ‘Grab The Calm’ which kind of perfectly sums up Dungen’s sound. It’s immediate and you want to get involved, but there’s also such a laid-back, hippy vibe to the whole thing. This is the 3rd and most astounding album from the young and talented Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes aka Dungen. This is the long awaited follow up to his two previous highly acclaimed albums, and this recording showcases the ultimate psychprogpopfolkrock this side of Elephant’s Memory, The Stone Roses and Pentangle. Ta Det Lugnt is a beautiful musical trip out into the Swedish forests and back again.

Gustav Ejstes grew up in a big 17th century house in a little village called Lanna in Vastergotland, Sweden. His father who's a fiddler, violinist and a music teacher, gave him a birthing in the mysteries of Swedish folk, but vitally also in classic 60s pop and rock, piano and guitar playing. During his teens Gustav got hooked into the world of Hip-Hop and sampling. He botanized around in the record jungle and on his expeditions got to hear many incredible Swedish 1960s-70s recordings that he had never heard before. This opened up a brand new world. Suddenly it was clear that he, instead of taking a detour through sampling, should play all the instruments he heard and prove that he could make it himself. Gustav went back to basics starting with guitar, drums, bass and keyboards.

Gustav’s story begins to read like a fairy tale when he then moved to his mothers farm situated deep in the woods of Smaland where his interest for the Swedish folk music intensified. After the daily tasks at the farm he worked all night long in his music studio down in his grandmothers basement. The music that he created became more and more his own and it wasn't long before rumours started to spread about Dungen’s willful ‘folkrockpsych’ in the Swedish countryside. His friend Stefan Kéry's record company Subliminal Sounds released Dungen’s first recordings as a vinyl-only album in 2001 which was praised by underground connoisseurs all over the world. Soon the majors were knocking at the door which resulted in three CD singles and the album Stadsvandringar (2002) which received great attention in Swedish media. Now picked up by US label Kemado Records, home of Elefant, The Fever, Lansing-Dreiden and Diamond Nights, they will be hitting US Shores in July for a select city tour and then the full country in September.

Fortunately Gustav decided to continue his (independent) collaboration with Subliminal Sounds and that’s why the album came out precisely the way he wanted; without compromises. Ta Det Lugnt serves up Dungen's most astounding and adventurous recording so far.

ps. it's pronounced "doon-yn"
