Tarantula A.D.

“Tarantula . . . melts classical practices with the energy of punk rock into a sound so dramatic it’ll draw pictures inside your shuttered eyelids.” - Tokion

Following the philosophy of their previous release, Atlantic, in which Tarantula A.D. recorded their works outdoors, in various homes, and during late night rogue studio sessions, the trio traveled across the country to an isolated island off the northwest coast of Washington state to record their new album, Book of Sand. Bringing engineer/co-producer Tom Clapp and a small box of limited recording equipment, the group set up shop in a wooden lodge on the banks of the Pacific Ocean. Recording with the doors ajar, the natural sounds of their environment set the stage for this project.

For two weeks, Tarantula A.D. recorded tirelessly until the tracking was nearly complete. Immediately after, two members journeyed back to New York while the third caught up with vocalists Devendra Banhart and Sierra Casady (CocoRosie) on tour in Europe and recorded them in hotel bathrooms and in the bowels of the Paris Metro. Back in New York, the group reconvened in an abandoned theater to record a few more pieces, as well as the vocal talents of Inouk's Damon and Alexander.

Finally, Tarantula A.D. completed Book of Sand, an expansive and cohesive collage of composition and sound, at Kemado Records' in-house studio.
