Death Cab For Cutie Sign to Atlantic Death Cab For Cutie have inked their first major label deal, and have decided to go with Atlantic Records. Starting out as Death Cab mastermind Ben Gibbard’s relatively unknown side project in 1997, the Seattle-based indie rock heroes are a prime example of the mainstream’s recent embrace of sweet, heartfelt indie rock (just check out the enormously popular Fox drama TV series The OC for proof). Led by Gibbard’s idiosyncratic yearning coos set against heart-wrenching melodies, Death Cab have garnered a steady following over the years through the releases of such records as their 1998 full-length debut Something About Airplanes, 2000’s We Have The Facts and We’re Voting Yes and 2001’s The Photo Album. Their most recent release, 2003’s Transatlanticism brought the band critical acclaim and likely helped prompt Atlantic’s offer. The entirety of Death Cab’s catalog will remain available via Barsuk Records, which has been the band’s home since its inception. The upcoming live EP, which is due out early in the spring, will also be released via Barsuk. Death Cab is reportedly currently at work on their major label debut; no other details have yet been revealed. | ![]() |
