So You Want to Know What is Going on with the NYC/Brooklyn Music Scene
by Lio | 00.00.0000

Forget about going to Roseland, Irving Plaza, CBGB’s, or Bowery Ballroom. The real scene takes place in the pitfalls of the Lower East Side and under the bridge of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s at venues like Pianos, Luxx, Luna Lounge, The Local, Red and Black and other loft parties that bands are perfecting their talents while djs fill the crowd with post punk dance tunes. You’ll hear sounds of Punk /Post Punk/Funk/Indie/Brit/Garage all
thrown together with a combination of late 70’s/80’s house dance beats. Everything has to have a thumping dance beat in this town in order to getthe kids going. There are always hot parties to attend and too many bands to
see.

So we’ll start the week off with telling you about some hot shows from last Friday/ Saturday.

Friday night kicked off when one of Brooklyn’s hottest new acts THE FLESH took the stage at Don Hill's. Filled with fresh, lusty anthems infused with dark post-punk and slinky R&B you can’t help but take notice of what you are
hearing. Think The Birthday Party topped with a thumping, chaotic, yet rhythmic dance beat. Then Elefant finished the night off for the girls with their beautiful lyrics and tight orchestration. Elefant sound as if you combined The Velvet Underground with David Bowie. Enough said.

Saturday:
First I headed to the infamous bar, The Stinger. It’s notorious known as a hip-hop hangout, but tonight they have allowed some of the bands to perform an early show for the kids of Brooklyn. Swiss Dot played are early set with
their Stereolab-esq sound followed by Cause Comotion!, think Television Personalities. But the highlight came when Oxford Collapse filled the bar with their heavy bass induced thumping sound. Oxford Collapse has been sprung back onto the music scene with their chaotic Joseph K, post punk dance sound. The three-piece even made some of the regular bar thugs bop their heads to the beat.

Oh shits it 11:00, so we run into a liquor store, got to stock up on cheap drinks, then head to Pianos to catch the Awek / The Affair gig. Awek filled the air with their quirky Pavement-esq. sound, always a crowd pleaser. Then
The Affair topped the night off for every hipster’s delight. The Affair’s Blondie comparisons are bringing in tons of interested peeps even through they have hardly been around more than 4 months. Kali’s vocals/lyrics assure
us of a promising future.
