Filter's Top 10 of 2005, Day Eight: Roddy Woomble of Idlewild Maybe it's something in the water, or in the haggis, but some of the best bands in the world seem to come from that great piece of plot we call Scotland. This year saw releases from several of the country's natives including veteran band Idlewild. The now grown up brit-rock boys released their fourth US release Warnings/Promises on Capitol. Lead singer (and frontman with the best name ever) Roddy Woomble shares his promises for the best albums of '05. Roddy Woomble of Idlewild 1. Sons and Daughters – The Repulsion Box (Domino) Roddy: I’ve listened to this record more than any other this year. It’s savage and brilliant. And very Scottish. 2. Marissa Nadler – Ballads of Living and Dying (Eclipse) Roddy: My favorite new discovery. Sounds like it was recorded in 1930. Absolutley beautiful in every way. 3. Devendra Banhart – Cripple Crow (XL/Beggars) Roddy: He can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned. He’s a life-force in music. And great live. 4. Teenage Fanclub – Man-Made (Merge) Roddy: Pretty much my favorite group; they’re effortless. “Cells” is one of my favorite songs of the year. 5. Malcolm Middleton – Into the Woods (Chemikal Underground) Roddy: Great lyrics, brilliant delivery and good tunes. 6. Smog – A River Ain’t Too Much to Love (Drag City) Roddy: Deadpan Bill. I'm a Smog fan through and through. The best lyricist about. 7. Animal Collective – Feels (Fat Cat) Roddy: Once again, like nothing I’ve ever heard. I’d like to be in this band for a day. 8. White Stripes – Get Behind Me Satan (V2) Roddy: Jack White is a superstar and he dusts off albums like this in two weeks. Respect. 9. Bruce Springsteen – Devils and Dust Roddy: An American master. I call him the Boss because he is. Dylan however, is the King. 10. Vashti Bunyan – Lookaftering (Dicristina Stair) Roddy: So nice to hear her sing again. One of my favorite voices in the whole world. | ![]() |
