NYC/Brooklyn Growing Music Scene (Week of 03/03/03-03/09/03) Lets start our week off at one of Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s haunts, Club Luxx. It’s a cold Monday night and we enter the club around 11:00 to a packed house. The sound of Radio 4 mixed into ESG is blasting out of the turntables. Peeps are dancing with tons of Brooklyn Lagers in their hands. Then Bastion hit the stage with their dark post-punk dance sound. As soon as their hit song “Dance” comes on the crowd is assured. Soon after NYC’s long standing White Light Motorcade blast you out of your seats with their intense rock sound. Another shot please. Tuesday night we are way tired, but have to head to the Mercury Lounge to see our beloved Aerial Love Feed (ALF). ALF started out as a shoegaze band, then quickly evolved into much more by adding a more electronic element with old hip hop beats. The end result is if you take present day Primal Scream, a dose of Ride, Public Enemy, PIL, and a strong fashion sense of Ian McCulloch. And I only had 2 Brooklyn Lagers and 4 Stellas that night. We decided to rest till Friday night, cause there are a ton shows going on this weekend. While Interpol plays two nights at Irving Plaza, we hit the decks at Red and Black for all the after show people to groove too. The big hit to the night was The Rapture’s “Oglio” latest single. People here just can’t get enough of that band. We are eagerly waiting for our crew to come back from the show at the Mercury Lounge. The Fever, and The Blue Sparks are stirring up tons of commotion lately. They shared the bill with The Realistics and The Witnesses. The Fever play great punk infused new wave styled garage rock so well that they are destined to be big.***** Five stars on this band. Everyone has fallen in love with them. And they don’t even have anything out yet. Blue Sparks are finding their own place in the scene with their Television-esq guitar sound and male/female shared vocal style. 8 stellas and 2 Brooklyn Lagers that night. Alright we haven’t recovered from Friday, but it’s Saturday night and we must go out. Outhud, a post punk dance groove band, are playing with old NYC dance legends Liquid Liquid at the Knitting Factory. But the Knitting Factory is no place to dance, so we head to Pianos on Ludlow St. Djs are filling the crowd with old Post Punk tunes like Joy Division and Echo and The Bunnymen. 2 Stellas down and I feel better. The girls crowd up the front of the stage in order to get a good look at Diego, the lead singer, of Elefant. This is probably the best show that I have seen them play. Girls are screaming all over the place. I bet a ton of the guys in the crowd wish they were him right now. 2 more Stellas and Sea Ray start playing beautifully crafted atmospheric chamber rock. Sea Ray enchant us with their intense sound, video projections, and light show. Bridging influences from Ride, Yo Lo Tengo, and Sonic Youth it’s no wonder why they have been developing a good size fanbase. 8 Stellas and 3 shots total. Sunday Dead to the world. | ![]() |
