Filter's Top 10 of 2006, Day Nineteen: Murder By Death Indiana’s Murder By Death, had a huge 2006 most notably marked by the release of an exceptional album, In Bocca Al Lupo, garnering reviews with more than a few flattering namedrops of Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. To support the release, the band completed multiple national tours as well as a European jaunt and a short stint opening for The Pogues in October. Despite the rush of gearing up for (yet another) national tour, Murder By Death’s frontman, Adam Turla and bassist Matt Armstrong were kind enough to let us in on some of their favorite records this year. Adam Turla and Matt Armstrong of Murder by Death William Elliott Whitmore, Song Of The Blackbird (Southern) Adam: William is the heir to the crown of Americana as far as I am concerned. He is the real deal. Langhorne Slim, When The Sun’s Gone Down (Narnack) Adam: Intoxicatingly fun songs and amazing improv during their live shows. Tom Waits, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards (Anti) Adam: This album is across the boards but flows really well. This man cannot be stopped! Against Me, Americans Abroad!!! Against Me!!! Live In London!!! (Fat Wreck Chords) Adam: This is a great live album that captures the energy of Against Me's live show. Mastodon, Blood Mountain (Reprise) Adam: Thank you Mastodon for keeping metal interesting and available to people like me who don't listen to a lot of modern metal. Lucero, Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers (Liberty & Lament) Adam: Good old southern rock songs about how women make you want to drink and drinking makes you want women. Twilight Singers, Powder Burns (One Little Indian) Matt: Greg Dulli has done it again. Another batch of slick and seductive jams for the modern lush. Channels, Waiting For The Next End Of The World (Dischord) Matt: J. Robbins is the man, period. This is the most fun agitated record I've heard in quite some time. The Black Angels, Passover (Light In The Attic) Matt: One of my new favorite bands. Fuzzy, droney, and totally engaging for pedal nerds like myself. Mogwai, Mr. Beast (Matador) Matt: Possibly their best to date. Adventurous and yet accessible. | ![]() |
